Small Business Saturday | Nov 24

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, American Express has created another holiday known as Small Business Saturday. This is a day that consumers, who have just started their holiday shopping season off at “Big Box” stores with Black Friday, are encouraged to go to Main St. in their hometowns and shop at the local small business. This began in November of 2010, well into the tough downturn in our economy. American Express really wanted to help bring something back so they started Small Business Saturday. Some businesses saw increases of nearly 45% that weekend. Other small business saw $10,000 come in just in one day.   Take a look at just some of the videos that thousands of small business owners have made over the past few years. There are some great stories. But the most important one (at least for you) is YOUR story. Follow the directions on this YouTube page, click where it says “Tell Your Story” and create your OWN video just like the ones in the link above. (All you need is a YouTube account for your business, which you can create here if you don’t have one.)   Download these free marketing materials they’ve made available. Banners, Logos, signs …

FB News Feed: Taking Advantage Of The New Changes

After 8 years of rumors and hoaxes that Facebook was going to start charging people money, it looks like one of them might actually be true. DO NOT PANIC. The change adds the “Promote” feature to a post. The draw for companies to pay for such a feature is that Facebook has made it more difficult for something you post on your personal profile (or more applicably, your business’ page) to show up on a friend or fan’s News Feed. An article I found on DMWMedia.com, by author Corey Christiansen of Metia Social Strategy, share some insight. If your number of “Likes” is relatively small (less than 300) don’t worry too much. It’s going to be easier for you to cope than a large company like Nike. Christiansen explans that “… a page with 100 fans can achieve 50 percent reach more easily than a page with 100,000 fans…[meaning that] This change most significantly affected larger pages with low engagement.” Again, while your small business’s reach probably won’t be affected too much, if you have a huge fan base and rely on them to do the work of talking about you, you’ll have to rethink your strategy. Christiansen had …

Mention In Columbus CEO Magazine

Support Grove City founder, Matt Yerkes, was quoted in Columbus CEO Magazine when being interviewed about the growth and future development of Grove City: “… Matt Yerkes, owner of Quick Square Consulting and a 19-year Grove City resident, ran his business from a north Columbus location for several years before moving it to the community where he resides. ‘Grove City has offered some really good incentives to come down here,’ Yerkes says. He took advantage of a city-sponsored loan program with a 3 percent interest rate that allowed him to update a former downtown drugstore from the early 1900s. The program offers loans from $5,000 to $150,000. Yerkes enjoys the building’s heritage and appreciates how the improvements have married its history with the modern nature of his technology-related business. His information and technology services software company doesn’t get much walk-in business. But he says he likes working in a historic district with unique buildings, ‘compared to being in an office condo. And you can walk right across the street to the local diner and see people that you know walking up the street,’ Yerkes says. With Beulah Park’s proximity to the Town Center, Yerkes says he sees ‘a huge opportunity …

Why Residents Benefit From Using Buy Local Directory

For the last several months, we’ve been building up a good base of businesses in our Directory. This is so we can have a good sampling of what Grove City has to offer in terms of products and services. Additionally, when someone sees their favorite Mexican restaurant is on the directory and investigates, they’ll also find a plumber (not that those things go together) that has joined, giving every local business a reason to be on the directory. One business can count on all the others to point to them and vice versa. However, when it comes to the individual resident (i.e. the customer that will actually put money into the economy), we haven’t clearly defined the benefits of using this directory to find businesses. Let me do that now.   Residents that use either this main site or our Facebook page will have access (for free and WITHOUT subscription) to certain information and deals that others simply may not know about. For example, some places may offer a discount simply for mentioning “Support Grove City”.   Local owners tend to be more invested in their customers’ satisfaction. So when it comes to the quality of the product or service, …
